The traditional media during the second half of the Twenty Century was limited to television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. These were the primary sources of news and entertainment for most people, and they relied on physical distribution methods to reach their audience.

The introduction of digital media began in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the widespread adoption of the internet and digital technologies. This period saw the rise of digital media formats such as websites, email, online video, and social media. The new digital media has been transforming all aspects of our lives since then, from how we entertain ourselves to how we do business. To give you an example, newspapers “Total estimated weekday circulation of U.S. daily newspapers was 55.8 million in 2000 and dropped to 24.2 million by 2020, according to Editor & Publisher and the Pew Research Center.” (Source: United States Census Bureau

Another example is how TV and Movies have changed since the early 2000s till now. In the early 2000s, movies switched from VHS to DVDs. NETFLIX, a company operating from a single warehouse, started to deliver DVDs via regular mail to their customer using a website. In the meantime, another company Blockbuster still has traditional stores. Today, Blockbuster is out of business, and NETFLIX no longer distributes DVDs. Instead, they produce and distribute content through an online streaming service to more than 232 million worldwide subscribers, and “in 2022, Netflix’s total net income was $5.044 billion” (Source: Influencer Marketing Hub). But NETFLIX is a pioneer nowadays. We have Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, to mention a few.

One of the most dramatic changes we have experienced is in the retail sector; many well-known store chains, Brands, and shopping malls have been closing or migrating to the digital industry, “For example, Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS)first collected data on e-commerce in 1998, when online sales were just $5.0 billion and online retail was just emerging as an irreversible force. More than 20 years later, e-commerce sales top $800 billion.” (Source: United States Census Bureau) Sears, Radio Shack, Pier One, and Bed Bath and Beyond are just some examples of fading brands affected by the lack of innovation

The main difference between digital and traditional media communication channels is how information is transmitted and received. Traditional media rely on physical distribution to deliver content to audiences. In contrast, digital media, such as websites, social media, blogs, podcasts, and online videos, rely on the internet to distribute content. Additionally, digital media offers greater targeting and personalization options, allowing content to be tailored to specific audiences based on their interests, location, and behavior.

In Summary, digital media has transformed society and businesses in many ways. Here are a few examples:

  1. Increased Connectivity: Digital media has brought people closer by enabling communication and collaboration across geographical and cultural boundaries. Social media like Facebook and Twitter have allowed people to connect and engage with others on a global scale.
  2. Greater Access to Information: Digital media has made it easier for consumers to access information and stay informed about current events. With news websites and social media platforms, people can get real-time news and information from multiple sources.
  3. Disruption of Traditional Business Models: Digital media has disrupted traditional business models by enabling new forms of entrepreneurship and innovation. Companies such as Amazon, Uber, and Airbnb have used digital platforms to disrupt traditional industries, such as retail, transportation, and hospitality.
  4. Personalization and Targeting: Digital media has allowed businesses to more effectively personalize and target their marketing efforts. With tools like social media ads and email marketing, businesses can reach specific audiences based on their interests, behavior, and location.
  5. Changed Consumer Behavior: Digital media has changed how people consume content, products, and services. With online shopping, streaming services, and mobile apps, people can access and consume content and products on demand whenever and wherever they want.
